IT Engineering - Is it Time for a New Enginering Discipline?
By Frank Leeds
The history of engineering traces a direct link between society’s reliance on systems with regulated and professionalized engineering. Information Technology is moving into the realm of systems that support life and safety issues (e.g., hospital and traffic control systems) and in doing so must codify and professionalize the engineering and configurations of IT systems. Furthermore, the rapid growth of IT has outpaced the industry’s skills to build economical, practical, and secure systems. What the IT industry needs—and what customers demand—is engineering formality, consistency, and process. Realistically, such industry-wide change can only take place by developing the standard discipline of IT Engineering, much the same as the professional Electrical, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering practices.

IP Surveillance and the Converged Network: Considerations for Facilities and Physical Security Staff
by Frank Leeds
This paper explores the relationship between the requirements of the
Internet Protocol (IP) surveillance system and those of a converged
network. The primary objective is to help the closed-circuit TV
(CCTV) facilities groups and physical security ("facilities/security")
groups begin to think outside of their traditional "boxes" in order to
better understand this relationship.
